“Restoring rhythm to the heartbeat of Africa”,
this was the theme of the 17th annual Nigerian reunion that took place in Houston, TX from July 3rd to July 7th 2013. Among the many events and activities that went on last week, probably the most memorable one was the Nigerian Image Awards which took place last saturday (July 6th) at the Marriott Hotel. The event recognized five astounding artists and achievers who impacted the Nigerian community through their work. The 2013 recipients were: Lanre “eLDee” Dabiri (Entertainment Entrepreneur), Hauwa Ibrahim (Humanitarian), Chido Nwangwu (Excellence in Journalism & Multimedia Leadership), Omobonike Odegbami (Leadership in Education), and last but not least the “Elegant Stallion” herself, Ms. Onyeka Onwenu (Lifetime Achievement). It was a great pleasure to witness each of these honorees receive their well-deserved award.
Of course as any other award ceremony, presenting the awards is not the entire show but just a part of it (the most important). The guests were also entertained by up and comings artists, Sean CZA, and Ugonna Nwosike. Ugonna exceptionally performed Onyeka Onwenu’s song, “Ekwe”. Mercy Okorie and comedian Wamilele, who made us laugh with his anecdotes, also hosted the show. We even had the opportunity of watching a preview of a new Nollywood movie “Gems of the Rainforest“, starring Ramsey Noah and directed by Don Okolo. (I will give more details on this movie on a separate post).
As a special treat, the one and only Onyeka Onwenu performed two of her popular songs: “Iyogogo” and “One Love”,( What a great way to end the ceremony by spreading some love in the room with “One Love”!) But the night was not over yet! Nigerian sensation and award winning artist, Davido, heated up the stage at the after party with his hits “Dami Duro“, “Gobe“, “All of You“, and more.(Ah so much exciting things in one evening!). The artist announced his upcoming US tour in October and November. As soon as I’ll have more details on the event, I’ll make sure to keep you posted.
I could not end this article without mentioning that 1TribeRadio was proud to present the 2013 NRC Excellence in Journalism and Multimedia Leadership to Mr. Chido Nwangwu of US Africa. Check out the pictures from the event below!
